In this Module, we will discuss the difference between Results and Actions. While this may sound like Junior League work, I encourage you to pay close attention to this material, as it will make a huge difference as we move forward.
Put simply, Results are the product or outcome of an endeavor. When you set out to cook dinner, your result is the meal served.
The critical thing to understand about a result is that you have NO CONTROL over it. None!
Have you ever followed a recipe, exactly, only to find that your dish flopped? I don’t know about you, but this is my experience of baking any time I’ve ever baked. I could never control for all the things that seemed to matter: the temperature of the mixing bowl, the temperature of the eggs, the humidity in the room – baking is totally different in my home town of New Orleans than it is at my current home in Montana! And since I couldn’t control for everything, ultimately, I had no control over the final product. It’s frustrating.
And I see the same frustration in the women who come to me and say, “Dr Dalili, I’m committed to losing 15 lbs! I don’t know why it isn’t working.” If they keep trying the same recipe in the same way, they keep getting the same flop, and they don’t understand why.
Here’s the end game –
IF YOU CAN’T CONTROL IT, YOU CAN’T COMMIT TO IT.
Actions, on the other hand, are the steps you take in service of reaching a Result (aka – a goal).
The critical thing to understand about an action is that you have ALL THE CONTROL over it. All of it!
Coming back to our baking analogy… you may not be able to impact the humidity in you house, which can ruin a souffle, but you can choose to follow every step in the recipe, exactly as they’re laid out for you, or not. You can choose to measure the 1/16th of a teaspoon or grab a pinch and move on. You can choose to leave your eggs on the counter for a few hours or shrug and say, “close enough.”
And just like with baking, the outcome may be influenced by factors beyond your control, but you and you alone control whether or not you took the action you said you’d take.
Here’s the end game –
IF YOU CAN CONTROL IT, COMMIT TO IT.
Since, ultimately, you cannot control a Result; you, ultimately, cannot commit to achieving a Result.
I will, however, ask you to give your 100% commitment to the Actions you believe will achieve that Result. Commit for 4 weeks or 4 months, or longer if required; but find out what works (or doesn’t) by taking the consistent, steady Action you truly believe will work. In essence… test it.
And if it doesn’t work… no big deal. Remember, we call that FEEDBACK, not failure. But there is no feedback without consistent action!
If the feedback you gather indicates that your plan needs to be modified, modify it. If it’s working, continue it. How will you know? You will either be getting closer to or further from your intended Result? So sure… track your results occasionally – checking in once a week or once a month is usually fine. But track your Actions daily.
Congratulations! You’re ready, [accessally_user_firstname].
In these five Modules, you have learned how goals are different than dreams and how you can set yourself up for greater success by pointing yourself at a goal, rather than away from a problem. You learned how to walk through the door opened by your Superficial Goals for a better understanding of what motivations you – we called this your Deep Goal or your WHY.
In Module 3, you learned a 5-step process which can be applied to any area of your life in which you feel stuck. And then we moved into the Paradigms that make the foundational structure of all the material I teach.
And in this Module, we differentiated Actions – to which you can fully commit – from Results – of which you have no control. You are now set up to take empowered action, uncover the fears that stop you, and reframe them so that you can recommit to your actions, ultimately setting you up to achieve your goal.
Let’s rock this! Please continue on to your Program.
