What you consume impacts your health and your consumption reaches far beyond what you eat.
I’m not about to tell you what news you should watch. Nor will I tell you how much time you should spend consuming news. These are individual balances.
The questions I pose are these:
How does the news that you consume leave you feeling?
What do you do with the emotions that get stirred up inside of you?
I am all for being fully informed, especially about the issues we are passionate about impacting.
I am not for consuming news that leaves you feeling angry, anxious, or depressed IF you’re not going to do anything productive with those feelings.
There is a difference between being informed and being addicted to drama and sensationalism. I recommend that you pay attention to the impact that your news consumption has on you. Limit what drains you. Focus on what motivates you.
Do not compare the complexity of your internal world to another person’s highlight reel.
Social media – like money – is a tool. It’s not good. It’s not bad. But it can have some very devestating impacts if we’re not careful.
INFORMATION OVERLOAD
If you’re following industry influencers, you may get so caught up in chasing bright shiny objects, changing course ever few days as a new influencer posts a new must-have/must-do tip, that you never make steady progress in a single direction. This leads to frustration due to the perception of failure.
ENVY
Don’t look at someone else’s cute, smiling children and wonder what you’re doing wrong as a parent because, while you’re thumbing through your scroll, your kids are fighting. Theirs were probably doing the same 5 minutes before or after the photo that was posted.
Same goes for clothes, homes, bodies, and boyfriends.
Remind yourself that you don’t know the full story when you’re watching someone’s IG story!
If your social media feed leaves you feeling inspired, motivated, and connected to those you love… great! Don’t change a thing. But if it leaves you feeling deficient or depressed, use that unfollow function liberally!
Just like the news or social media, tv and movies can be uplifting, inspiring, motivating or informative. Or they can be a way that we procrastinate, go numb, avoid important but difficult conversations, or pretend to connect with others while completely avoiding the intimate and vulnerable.
My recommendation is that you consider what you want to create with your life refer to Success Simplified and explore the ways that media is helping or hurting.
