Your Bathroom

Your bathroom may be a hidden source of health depleting products.

There is good evidence that our skin absorbs much of what we apply to it. Depending on your product choices, this works for or against your health.

According to the Environmental Working Group, on average, women use 12 personal care products per day, exposing themselves to approximately 168 chemical ingredients.

These chemicals cause harm by mimicing your estrogen (leading to tissue growth, breast tenderness, heavy periods or painful periods) or disrupting thyroid and other endocrine function (leading to fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain).

My goal is to keep this simple and actionable, not to give you a chemistry lession, so rather than getting into the weeds, I’ll provide more resources for those who want to go further.

If you want to find out more about your favorite brands, here are some resources to support your inquiry:

Skin Care

Here are two of my favorite skin care products/brands and links to their site. I share these because they’re great – I have no financial affiliation with these companies.

The Hemp Witch makes a great oil cleanser and facial serum.

The Good Stuff Botanicals has a vast line of natural products. Gypsy Cream is my first choice for those with acne and acne scars. It’s full of anti-inflammatory hemp oil, which helps to reduce scarring faster than I thought possible.

Make Up

W3ll People covers all the bases with tinted moisturizers, lip, cheek, and eye color.

I’ve also had pretty good luck with RMS Beauty

I often check Thrive Market for skin care and makeup, as they have a great filter feature which lets you search for products that exclude certain ingredients.

Eat Gluten Free? Read this!

As you make the transition from chemically laden conventional brands to more natural products, you may need to scan those labels too. Natural skin and hair care companies often swap synthetic chemicals with hydrolyzed wheat protein (gluten).

While your skin doesn’t absorb gluten, if it’s on your skin or your hair, it’s highly likely to make its way to your lips when you touch food after touching you hair or body. Depending on your level of sensitivity, this may or may not be a problem; but if you think you are gluten-sensitive and avoiding it in the kitchen hasn’t resolved all of your symptoms, check your bathroom!
